Kleine landjes zijn leuk, vindt Trouw-correspondent Jelle Brandt Corstius. En hoe obscuurder, hoe beter. Hij kwam erachter dat vooral de landjes in de Kaukasus met bizarre namen als Karatsjaj-Tsjerkessië hem konden bekoren. Niet dat het daar nu altijd even prettig is - denk aan de recente oorlog in Zuid-Ossetië - maar fascinerend is het er wel. En zelfs in oorlogstijd trof Brandt Corstius er verse zoete nectarines en mannen die achter biggetjes aan renden.
Net als in zijn succesvolle debuut ‘Rusland voor gevorderden’ vervalt Brandt Corstius in 'Kleine landjes' niet in eindeloze politieke analyses, maar ontdekt hij de Kaukasus door met de mensen te praten. Zoals met mannen van wie de zus gestolen is, omdat dat nu eenmaal heel normaal is. De president van Kalmukkië, die naar eigen zeggen is ontvoerd door buitenaardse wezens. Een ex-maffiabaas uit Hannover, die nu in stilte leeft in Abchazië. En al knoflookthee drinkend met een geschiedenisstudent in Tsjetsjenië.
