Fietsgidsen Letland

Fietsgids Iron Curtain Trail : Bikeline :
Iron Curtain Trail Bikeline (Engels) € 15.90

The Iron Curtain stretched over a distance of almost 7,000 kilometres through Europe from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea and divided the continent into east and west. Until the peaceful revolutions in Eastern Mid-Europe, it was the physical and ideological border between two hostile blocs. Not only were many neighbouring countries separated thereby, but also Germany was divided into east and west. Today there is hardly anything left to see of the former death strip, the remnants are no longer a dividing line.
Memories however must be made visible! We know that there are no mutual memories between west and east. The eastern and western Europeans have very different memories of the border, also because it was interpreted completely contrarily by the official politics in both parts of Europe. What the Warsaw Pact countries glorified as “protection from the class enemy“, was seen by the western countries as a symbol of the lack of freedom that socialism actually provided.
Visible memories are already present with the “Berlin Wall Trail“. For the 40th anniversary of the erection of the wall, I initiated a proposal, as a member of the Berlin House of Representatives, in which the senate was requested to designate a cycle and hiking trail along the former border, to place the remaining portions of the wall under monument conservation, to design it cycle-friendly and to signpost it. The public is invited to the “wall forays“ by the Alliance ‘90/The Greens which have been performed every summer by the author since the year 2001. The book “Berlin Wall Trail“ was simultaneously published by the Esterbauer Verlag in the series bikeline, in which the 160 kilometres around West Berlin – 40 kilometres between the two city halves, 120 kilometres between West Berlin and the surrounding – were described.

Reisgids Riga : Thomas Cook :
Riga Thomas Cook (Engels) € 11.95

Riga in the Thomas Cook Pocket Guide series; comprising a range of handy, pocket-sized guides covering a comprehensive range of international cities and regions. Each of the guides in the series identifies the destination’s most entertaining highlights and principal attractions, helping visitors decide what to do in a limited time. The guides are aimed at those planning city or resort-based breaks and often cover unusual destinations that are not available from other publishers.

Thomas Cook’s Pocket Guides are arranged thematically and are designed to help readers use them easily on the move. In the city guides, an introductory section profiles the destination, with background information on when to go, history, lifestyle and culture. A ‘Making the Most of…’ section explores the city, with individual sections on shopping, eating and drinking, entertainment and nightlife, sport and relaxation, accommodation, suggested itineraries, principal sites of interest and advice on arrival. Further sections detail the various regions and neighbourhoods of the city in addition to recommendations for the best out of town trips.

In the regional and resort-based titles, a Resorts section explores the range of possible options, with details of the nearest beaches, prices, locations and things to see and do. There is also a chapter dedicated to excursions away from the resort, with recommendations of principal attractions in the region. A Lifestyle chapter details useful information on food and drink, shopping, activities for children, sports and activities and festivals and events.

A Practical Information section provides a directory of useful guidance, tailored to both the city and regional destinations. The city guides include information on getting there, entry requirements, money, health, safety and crime, opening hours, toilets, children, communication, electricity, travellers with disabilities, Tourist Information centres, background reading, emergency medical services, police and embassies and consulates. The resort-based titles also include information on beaches, customs, getting around, media, religion, smoking, time differences and tipping.

Please note: Thomas Cook are currently replacing the comprehensive range of titles in the ‘City Spot’ and ‘Hot Spot’ series with the new ‘Pocket Guide’ series. While the books have been updated and re-jacketed, content still remains predominantly the same, so customers are advised to consult the City Spot and Hot Spot series if the destination they require has not yet been published in the new Pocket Guide format. ...
